Psalm 40

Read Psalm 40

Remembering and Relying on God’s Faithfulness

Psalm 40, a psalm of David, is a beautiful reflection on deliverance. The first part celebrates God’s faithful rescue of David from a desperate situation; the second part is a heartfelt plea for God to deliver him once again. The psalm moves from testimony to petition—from remembering what God has done to crying out for what God will do.

As I studied this psalm, I was struck by how David talked himself through his distress. He didn’t fixate on his current trouble. Instead, he began by rehearsing God’s past goodness—remembering how God had lifted him out of “the miry pit” and set his feet on solid ground. David testified to himself about God’s faithfulness before he ever asked for help again.

There’s a lesson for us here. Whatever challenges you may be facing today, take time to recall how God has already worked in your life. Before you bring your present needs to Him, pause and give testimony—out loud if you can—about His past faithfulness. As you do, you may find your heart strengthened and your faith renewed. The same God who delivered you before will be faithful to deliver you again.
