Psalm 51

Read Psalm 51.

When I have come out of seasons of sinful behavior, I have found myself praying very similarly to David here in Psalm 51.

In those moments, I am brought low, feeling guilt and shame, questioning my worthiness of mercy or sanctification, confusing my sinful living with my true identity as a beloved child of God, always in need of more purifying love and guidance.

As David writes, he proclaims what he knows to be true about God, and he confesses his sins, humbling himself for whatever judgment God deems fair. David asks God for cleansing and new life, a right willing spirit. He admits he doesn’t always feel the joys of the Lord on his own; he needs help from God to be filled again with the joys of His salvation. He proclaims he is sorry and ready to be renewed and shaped for God’s glory.

“You’re the One I’ve violated, and you’ve seen it all, seen the full extent of my evil. You have all the facts before you; whatever you decide about me is fair.” (Ps 51:4 MSG)

“Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” (Ps 51:6 ESV)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me…Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.” (Ps 51:10,12 ESV)

“I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.” (Ps 51: 16-17 MSG)

Heavenly Father, we are in need of your mercy, your unfailing love, your sanctifying hands, your continual guidance in the way everlasting. When we sin or even make a path of sins, do not let us flee from you or hide; instead, teach us to draw even closer to you. We want to know you better; show us your truth and your ways. We want to love you and serve one another; teach us how again and again. We long to become more like you and reflect your glory in this life and forever; restore in us the joys of your salvation, and uphold us with open and willing spirits, now and forever. Amen.
