Psalm 75

Read Psalm 75.

The word that keeps coming to mind after reading this Psalm is steadiness. I think it’s because of verse 3: “When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars.”

I’m imagining that I’m sitting on top of this architectural building that’s held up by these massive Roman pillars (that are really beautiful and ornate, by the way). And I’m confident that the structure of the pillars will hold me up even if a huge storm were to come and rock them.

God is the judge of the earth, judging each person with equity, cutting off the horns of the wicked while lifting up the horns of the righteous. And while the word “judgement” is sometimes a scary word, at least to me, I do not fear God’s judgment because of who he is. He is steady and sure, and I trust him just like I would trust an architectural Roman pillar to hold me up (actually more so, but you get the picture).

I love verse 2 which says, “At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity.” God is the one who decides when it is time to judge the earth. Not me, not you, not anyone else. Just like he spoke the world into existence, he will speak his judgement in his own time. I don’t know why exactly, but this brings me so much peace and comfort.

God and his character deserves to be praised and that is exactly what this Psalm does. Verse 1 in the Message version says this: “We thank you, God, we thank you—your Name is our favorite word; your mighty works are all we talk about.” This is how I want to praise our God - forever thanking Him and sharing all He’s done with everyone around me.
