The Second Mountain by David Brooks

This is NOT a “Christian” book in the classic sense, and some of the content and language reflect its broader base. However, there is truth, goodness, and beauty in this book. This work contains resounding echoes of our Father’s heart throughout, resounding from a rebirthed and deepening faith in the author. So our encouragement is twofold. Read this book for what it is, and read more of Jesus’ words! The reason we can see the truth and recognize the echoes is because we know the Truth and have heard the Word. So, as the author will encourage you, whatever time you spend reading this book, spend as much time with Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and in the Psalms. Doing so will make both better.

Invitation to Solitude and Silence by Ruth Haley Barton

Coming to know who we truly are, even in relation to God, almost always leads us into the silence and solitude of our hearts and souls. While such a place can be intimidating, Barton’s work helps guide us into the depths where we discover that God has already gone deeper and is there to meet and raise us up.
